Thanks to the efforts of animal rights activists at home and abroad, 15 stray, disabled dogs were on Wednesday flown to the US, where they will be paired up with loving owners.

The dogs were flown aboard a China Airlines aircraft at a discounted rate.

¡§This was the largest single shipment of stray dogs sent from Taiwan for adoption in the United States in recent memory,¡¨ said Ni Ching-tai (Ù¨Ê¥x), an Animal Rescue Team Taiwan (ARTT) volunteer who is in charge of foreign dog adoption.

All of the dogs sent were physically disabled strays that were rescued by ARTT volunteers, Ni said. She said that each of the animals had endured a miserable life and were in desperate need of good care.

Ni said the 15 dogs would initially be sent to shelters run by animal rights groups in Los Angeles and Seattle. Once they became accustomed to their new living environment, the dogs would be put up for adoption by pet-loving families, she said.

The ARTT mobilized more than 50 volunteers to help prepare for the dog shipment and China Airlines arranged a 50 percent discount on the flight, Ni said.

Over the past three years, she said, the ARTT and its US counterparts had found new homes on the US West Coas for 600-plus stray dogs rescued from around Taiwan.
