The government of the US state of Nevada has expressed strong interest in investing in Miaoli County's planned gaming district.
Chen Si-ting (陳思庭), head of the Nevada representative office in Taiwan, paid a visit to the Miaoli County Government on Tuesday seeking a better understanding of its plan to create a special gaming district in Tongsiao Township (通霄).
An engineering consultancy company, commissioned by the county government to select and assess potential sites for the gaming district, completed its initial report recently. The company selected an 800-hectare plot of land near a salt refinery in the township.
In the report, the company said the gaming district would attract foreign capital, facilitate the introduction of international management standards that would help cultivate management talent at the local level and bring the standards of the tourism industry to international standards.
Miaoli is one of many counties vying for the right to set up casinos once gambling is legalized.
President-elect Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) has said he supports the idea of a gaming district in Penghu if adequate measures are in place, but has not made it clear if he backs the idea of casinos on Taiwan proper.
During Chen's visit on Tuesday, Miaoli County Commissioner Liu Cheng-hung (劉政鴻) said that Tongsiao, at the midpoint between northern and southern Taiwan and with a convenient rail and highway transportation network, was ideally situated for the project.
In August, a delegation of representatives, hotel executives and tourism officials led by Nevada Governor Bob Miller visited Taiwan and gave three presentations on their gaming industry.
