Taipei police yesterday revealed the identity of a man who, they suspect, left a number of bullets under a car near Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Frank Hsieh's (謝長廷) campaign headquarters in Taipei.
Police said they discovered Chen Wu-hsiung's (陳武雄) fingerprints on two boxes of ammunition containing a total of 15 bullets left at the scene on Friday.
Police said Chen admitted to discovering the boxes under the car and touching them, but insisted he was not the one who had placed them there originally.
Police said they have not decided whether to charge Chen.
National Police Agency Director-General Hou Yu-yi (侯友宜) said yesterday that fingerprints were found on four of the 15 bullets, as well as the boxes of ammunition.
Police were reviewing footage from surveillance cameras near the site, he said.
"There is no evidence so far to indicate that the case is related to the presidential campaign," Hou said.
He said police had nevertheless stepped up security at Hsieh's headquarters.
Police said they had formed a task force to investigate the case.
A member of Hsieh's campaign team who wished to remain anonymous told reporters on Friday that Hsieh's Taipei office had recently experienced an increase in the number of threatening phone calls received.
Hsieh has taken to wearing his bulletproof vest, the person said.
