    ■ CRIME

    Police seize fake Penguins

Intellectual property rights police in Chiayi busted a counterfeit clothing ring yesterday, seizing more than 10,000 fake Penguin brand garments with an estimated value of over NT$100 million (US$3.24 million). Police said the members of the ring would be prosecuted for violations of the Trademark Act (商標法). Police said they had noticed several months ago that members of the ring often held going-out-of-business clearance sales at the locations where they sold the brand-name clothing. After the authorized Taiwan seller of Penguin confirmed that the clothing was counterfeit, police and prosecutors raided outlets in Chiayi County and Taipei County, arresting several suspects, including 38-year-old Huang Chi (黃啟), and seizing more than 10,000 articles of clothing.

    ■ CULTURE

    Youths paint a fence

More than 50 young people took part in a massive graffiti activity in Taipei yesterday. The activity, sponsored by the Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs and the Taiwan Alliance for Advancement of Youth Rights and Welfare, took place at the fence enclosing a planned cultural and sports park at the former Songshan Tobacco Factory. Graffiti artists Ano and Bounce led the teenagers in "giving an interesting look to the 400 meter fence." The sponsors had some explaining to do when a passerby, mistaking a student surnamed Huang for a vandal, called the police. Taipei cultural officials said that although many cities have banned graffiti, those cities that manage or encourage graffiti works "create special spaces" in the city and help "bring some marginal artists back into the mainstream.
