Most pilots pass ICAO's English exam

    By Shelley Shan
    STAFF REPORTER
    Thursday, Mar 06, 2008, Page 2

Almost all of the nation's pilots, air traffic controllers and communication personnel have passed a mandatory English proficiency test required by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Civil Aeronautics Administration said yesterday.

The test examines the English-speaking skills of pilots and air traffic controllers in radio communications. They must also demonstrate their knowledge of aviation terms and the ability to use them correctly.

Each applicant was graded on several items, including their pronunciation and proficiency when using aviation terms.

By Monday, 2,081 pilots and 312 air traffic controllers had passed the exam. Pilots and air traffic controllers worldwide were required to meet the ICAO's new requirements by yesterday.

The CAA said 2,097 pilots had taken the test. Only sixteen pilots failed: 14 work for Far Eastern Air Transport Corp (FAT) and two at Transasia Airways.

They have been temporarily suspended from their duties until they pass the test.

Meanwhile, the CAA told FAT yesterday to refund passengers who bought tickets for trips between Kaohsiung and Hualien and between Taipei and Tainan, routes that were canceled at the beginning of this month.
