The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) will hold a Lunar New Year meeting today with China-based Taiwanese businesspeople to discuss issues of key concern to them, including direct cross-strait transportation links, a senior official said yesterday.
Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairman Chen Ming-tong (陳明通) said the gathering aimed to explore views on the establishment of direct shipping and air links and the opening of charter flight services across the Taiwan Strait.
Officials also want to know how the government can help Taiwanese businesses hurt by the recent snowstorms in China.
President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) will join the gathering, but Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) and his Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) rival Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) were not invited, Chen Ming-tong said.
Top SEF officials also met yesterday with 12 leaders of China-based Taiwanese businesspeople's associations.
