Bank officials warn against Lunar New Year ATM scams

The Bankers Association of the Republic of China reminded people ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays to be on guard against ATM card scams when withdrawing cash from their accounts.

Association officials said yesterday that ATM card swindlers have developed a variety of new scams for tricking cardholders into revealing their PIN numbers and other personal information.

The officials reminded people to first seek verification of the authenticity of any organization requesting their ATM card information or to call the National Police Agency's anti-fraud hotline on 165 before divulging any information.

As banks will be closed for six straight days from Feb. 6 to Feb. 11, the association officials also offered some reminders to the public to avoid problems when using cash machines during the holiday period.

Saying that there is a daily limit on the amount that can be withdrawn from an ATM, the officials urged people to work out their budget beforehand to ensure that they have ample cash available for the holidays.

They also suggested that people refrain from using ATMs between 2pm and 4:30pm during the three days before the start of the holidays to avoid long queues.

ATM cardholders are urged to hold on to their transaction receipts as proof if they experience any problems while using an ATM and to call the emergency service number posted on or next to the machine to explain their situation immediately.

If they cannot get through to anyone at the service number listed at the ATM, they can call the Financial Information Service Co on (02) 2630-1222 for assistance, the officials said.
