Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Tseng Yung-chuan (曾永權) won the party's deputy legislative speaker nomination yesterday, defeating five opponents in two straw polls.
With 73 lawmakers present, Tseng won 27 votes in the first poll, while legislators Pan Wei-kang (潘維剛), Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) and Shyu Jong-shyoung (徐中雄) tied for second place with 11 votes apiece.
Legislator Huang Chao-shun (黃昭順) placed third with six votes and Legislator John Chiang (蔣孝嚴) won five votes. One caucus member cast an invalid vote, while Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) said he did not vote in either poll to maintain his impartiality.
Of the second-place contenders, Shyu was chosen through a drawing of lots to compete against Tseng in the second poll. Tseng won the second vote 53 to 17.
Legislators Lee Ching-hua (李慶華) and Lu Hsueh-chang (呂學樟) cast ballots in the first round but did not participate in the second poll.
Afterward KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄) told a press conference that the party's Central Standing Committee would be asked to verify Tseng's nomination tomorrow.
Tseng, a five-term legislator and former KMT caucus whip, thanked those who had supported him, while Shyu said the poll result showed Tseng's strength.
Wu said the vote showed the poll had been a "competition between gentlemen" because none of the contenders had resorted to "cheap shots" in their campaign bids.
