Major hotel chains are investing in Ilan County after witnessing the sharp jump in visitors following the opening of the Hsuehshan Tunnel last year, the county government said yesterday.
Chen Te-shing (陳德星), deputy director-general of Ilan County's business and tourism bureau, said that the number of visitors reached 1.3 million, representing an increase of 50 percent, a year after the tunnel's opening in June last year.
He said that a theme park operator has just signed a contract with the county government to build an ocean biotechnology entertainment park in Wujie Township (五結).
Ambassador Hotel (國賓大飯店) and Sheraton Hotel (喜來登大飯店) have also signed contracts with the county government to build hotels in Nanao (南澳) and Sansing (三星) townships, respectively, Chen said.
The Evergreen Group and Far Eastern Textile are also planning to construct hotels in Jiaosi (礁溪), he said.
Chen said the county has several unique tourist attractions, including a plethora of hot springs and cold springs in Suao Township (蘇澳).
To attract more visitors, the county government is joining this year's Taipei International Travel Fair, which will run from Thursday through Monday.
In a press conference yesterday, the county government invited major hoteliers in Ilan to draft special package promotions that can be presented at the travel fair to attract the public.
