`Huakang Wolf' seeks church work

Hualien prosecutors have yet to decide whether to approve a request from the "Huakang Wolf" (華岡之狼) to work at a church during his time on parole, his guardian said yesterday.

"He told me that he would love to help, probably teaching children mathematics or English and related church activities after school at our church, about 15km away from his house," said Reverend Huang Ming-chen (黃明鎮).

The "Wolf" was paroled on Thursday afternoon after 12 years behind bars for sexually assaulting 30 women

Surnamed Yang, he was dubbed the "Huakang Wolf" because most of his victims were students at the Chinese Culture University on Yangmingshan -- an area known as Huakang.

Huang said Yang's proposal was welcomed by the church but still needs approval from the prosecutors.

Wearing a radio frequency identification device that would help police track his movements, Yang is not allowed to stray more than 30m from his home between 8pm and 5am every day.

During the day, local police patrol will visit him twice a day regardless of where he is and his guardians will call him twice a day.

Yang is also banned from traveling outside Hualien County and must report to a psychologist every week for six months before he is evaluated again.

The Hualien Prosecutors' Office said yesterday they had received Yang's request, but had not yet made a decision.

"Today is just his first day as a `half-free' man," said Huang Yi-chun (黃怡君), spokeswoman for the prosecutors' office. "He will have his chance to serve the community. There is no need to rush."

In response to concern expressed by some about recidivism, Huang Ming-chen said he has faith in Yang.

"I think he is totally ready to return," he said.
