A private foundation has launched a new project to help provide after-school supplementary education for children from disadvantaged families or remote areas.
The Yonglin Foundation, chaired by Shirley Kuo (郭曉玲), daughter of Hon Hai Group chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘), will collaborate with the Boyo Social Welfare Foundation, eight local universities and several social groups in operating the project, called "Yonglin Hope Elementary School."
At the inauguration ceremony on Saturday, Kuo said the Younglin Foundation would provide NT$700 million (US$21.2 million) over the next two years to finance the project.
During the first semester, Kuo said, the project is expected to help more than 2,000 schoolchildren through homework tutorial services.
Boyo Foundation chairman Lee Chia-tung (李家同), a former president of National Chi Nan University, will serve as convener of the project, Kuo said, adding that the universities involved are National Taitung University, National Pingtung University of Education, National Changhua University of Education, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National Hualien University of Education, Fu Jen Catholic University, National Taiwan Ocean University and National Dong Hua University.
In addition to providing after-school supplementary education, Kuo said, the Yonglin Hope Elementary School will also organize winter and summer camps annually to offer extracurricular training programs in sports, arts, the humanities and others fields.
Kuo said she hoped the Yonglin Hope Elementary School program would not only contribute to expanding schoolchildren's intellectual horizons, but also inspire them to improve their character, develop their talents and never give up in the long battle to improve their lives.
Lin Huai-min (林懷民), founder of the Cloud Gate Dance Theater, was in attendance to show his support for the project. He said the implications were the equivalent of providing foster care to thousands of children and encouraging youths living in poverty to never abandon their dreams and pursue their studies.
