The procession of Matsu (媽祖) is one of the most important and influential religious events in Taiwan, will traverse continents on a journey to New York City to join an international cultural gala later this month.
The Matsu statue from Fengtien Temple (奉天宮) in Hsinkang Township (新港), Chiayi County, is scheduled to be hoisted onto her sedan chair in a formal ceremony on Wednesday before her departure for New York City, where Matsu, the goddess of the sea, will be part of the international cultural event scheduled for next Friday and Saturday, said Lu Ming-sen (盧明森), chairman of Fengtien Temple.
A large delegation, including Fengtien Temple officials, a Taiwanese folk art performance group and a 16-member Matsu sedan chair carrying team, will accompany the goddess on her trip.
Several days before the Matsu procession leaves, Fengtien Temple will stick yellow paper notes bearing the red seal of Matsu on the walls of buildings along streets leading to the temple to spread the message of Matsu's departure and allow worshippers to obtain Matsu's blessing.
