The Maokong cable car system was the worst municipal project under former Taipei mayor Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) administration, the results of an online survey conducted by a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei City councilor showed.
A total of 1,491 people who took part in the survey were also dissatisfied with the Jiancheng Circle night market, the Taipei Arena, Longshan Temple Underground Mall and Taipei's bus lane policy, the poll results showed.
"The `10 new construction projects' are dangerous time bombs in the lives of Taipei residents. Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) should acknowledge Ma's failed policies and take immediate steps to improve them," DPP Taipei City Councilor Hsu Chia-ching (徐佳青) told a press conference yesterday.
About 90 percent of the survey's participants agreed that the Maokong cable car, which cost NT$1.3 billion (US$39 million) and suffered 151 failures in its first 21 days of operation, was the worst mayoral project of Ma's tenure.
The project ranked second-poorest was the Jiancheng Circle night market, which was forced to shut down last year after a refurbishment totaling NT$200 million failed to revive the famous market's business.
The Taipei Arena, a key municipal project launched under Ma's administration in 2005, cost the city government NT$4.8 billion, but was the subject of a recent bribery controversy that resulted in the annulment of Eastern Multimedia Group's contract to run the facility. Taipei City took over the running of the Arena last week.
The Ximen market renovation project, the city-wide wireless network and the Taipei Dome project were also among the 10 most contentious projects under Ma's administration, the poll's results showed.
In addition to accusing Ma of wasting the city government's budget, Hsu also condemned a number of Ma's other municipal projects, including the poor quality of benches installed at bus stops and the facilities at the Taipei Arena.
Hsu said she would organize another online poll next week on the most dangerous constructions.
