ISLAND TOUR Since the hit movie `Island Etude' came out in April, bike shop owners and cycling enthusiasts have noticed a rise in groups circling Taiwan's coastline

A line from the biggest domestic hit movie of the season struck a chord with many of its viewers: "There are some things that, if you put off doing them now, you will never get around to doing them for the rest of your life."

"I can definitely see an `Island Etude' effect. Even non-cyclists want to ride around Taiwan after seeing that movie," said Liu Cheng-yau (劉振堯), a member of Chiayi's H2O cycling club.

"They purchase a bike to circle Taiwan. Maybe they will keep the bike and go cycling on weekends," he said.

Liu Cheng-yau said he had also seen a definite increase in the number of leisure cyclists in his area.

"I've noticed several new cycling clubs in Chiayi in recent years," he said.

Giant Manufacturing chairman King Liu (劉金標) also created a buzz around the activity after riding around the island in May at the age of 73. It took him 15 days.

"It was something that I have wanted to do for decades but did not find the time to do," King Liu said.

He said at the time that Island Etude had convinced him to finally undertake the trip.

King Liu recommended a bike tour as the best way to get to know Taiwan.

"Driving is too fast, walking is too slow," he said. "Cycling is the perfect speed to see Taiwan."
