President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday attended the grand opening of the National Defense University's new Bade campus and said that he was very satisfied with the recently completed facilities.
"The university is the biggest military academy in the country. In addition to developing more outstanding military officers, I believe this new campus will help establish a close relationship between the military and civilians," the president said.
Construction began on the facility in 1999 and it was completed at a cost of NT$4.4 billion (US$133 million). The relocation of the university was a major part of the military's plan to relocate many of its key units.
In addition to the university campus, the military will also relocate the Ministry of National Defense and the Air Force General Command Headquarters.
The campus will be open to the public on national holidays and weekends from Dec. 1.
