More than 65 percent of students responding to a recent survey have had experience with pornography, with most first contact taking place between the ages of 13 and 15, officials from the Bureau of Health Promotion said yesterday.
The online survey was conducted by the Mercy Memorial Foundation on behalf of the bureau between June 15 and June 30 among 3,614 undergraduates and students studying in senior high school and junior high school as well as elementary school seniors. A total of 1,733 boys and 1,881 girls took part in the survey.
The results of the poll showed that 15.3 percent of students in the senior year of elementary school, 38 percent of junior high school students, 69.3 percent of senior high school students and 79.4 percent of undergraduates admitted to having seen pornography.
Of these, 50 percent of junior high school students, 51.9 percent of senior high school students and 35 percent of undergraduates said they had their first contact with pornography between the ages of 13 and 15.
The figures compare with 27.8 percent of students in the senior year of elementary school, 16.4 percent of junior high school students and 14.8 percent of senior high school students who said they had first encountered pornography before the age of 10.
Among the boys who had viewed pornography, 72 percent had seen erotic films, 65.5 percent had looked at erotic pictures and 58.5 percent had visited erotic Web sites.
Among the girls, 53.4 percent had seen erotic comics, 46.3 percent had read erotic fiction and 40.7 percent had seen erotic films.
Saying that the age of first contact with pornography was getting younger, foundation chief executive Yen Han-wen (晏涵文) urged parents to provide "correct" sex education to their children to prevent them from imitating pornography, which he said presents to teenagers undesirable sexual scenarios such as violence, sadism and incest.
A group of Taiwanese-American and Tibetan-American students at Harvard University on Saturday disrupted Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng’s (謝鋒) speech at the school, accusing him of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said.
