Body of drowned Chinese tourist found

The body of a Chinese tourist who fell into the sea on Wednesday off Yehliu Geological Park (野柳公園) was spotted and recovered in a nearby fishing harbor yesterday.

Liao Xin (廖鑫), a 28-year-old art teacher, was trying to take a photo on the edge of a rock in the scenic park shortly after noon on Wednesday when a wave knocked him into the sea.

Liao was with a 40-member group from Chongqing No. 18 Middle School in Sichuan Province that arrived in the country on Monday for a sightseeing tour.

A search team consisting of firemen from Taipei County and staff of the Coast Guard Administration combed the sea all afternoon to no avail. The search operation was made doubly difficult by strong winds and big waves brought by Tropical Storm Wutip.

Residents of Wanli Township spotted Liao's body yesterday morning at Dongao Fishing Harbor (東澳港), located several hundred meters to the south of Yehliu park. Local police confirmed his identity through papers he was carrying.

The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), the nation's semi-official organization for handling exchanges with China, said it had notified Liao's parents about their son's death and would help them get visas to enter Taiwan.

The principal of Chongqing No. 18 Middle School and a senior school official will stay in Taiwan to help Liao's parents, SEF officials said.

Tropical Storm Wutip followed close on the heels of Tropical Storm Pabuk, which made landfall in the country on Tuesday.
