A nine-day summer workshop on Taiwanese culture for the children of Taiwanese businesspeople operating in China has succeeded in improving the participants' understanding of their homeland, You Ying-lung (´å¬Õ¶©), vice chairman and secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), said yesterday.
You said the workshop, organized by the quasi-official SEF for the fourth year in a row, was attended by 300 elementary and junior high school students in two groups at Fengchia University in Taichung City from July 7 to July 15, and July 21 to last Sunday.
The government pays close attention to the education of the children of these businesspeople and has built three schools in China for Taiwanese students, You said.
In light of the differences between Taiwan and China in their political systems, economic development and cultures, the workshops were designed to help children gain a better understanding of Taiwan so that they would identify themselves as Taiwanese and to mitigate the difficulties they could encounter upon returning home.
The SEF spent NT$500,000 (US$15,200) sponsoring the workshops, You said.
