Cold front is expected to bring showers

A cold front that is headed toward Taiwan is expected to bring showers or thunderstorms to the nation's north, center and east by tomorrow, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

Meteorologists forecast that the entire country will be under the influence of the system until Monday and warned of possible flooding resulting from heavy rainfall.

    `Plum rains'

Wu Teh-jung (§d¼wºa), director of the Weather Forecast Center, said Taiwan is entering the peak of the "plum rain" season, during which lingering frontal systems can generate increased thunderstorms and torrential rainfall.

    Falling temperatures

The approaching system is expected to affect Taiwan for five or six days, Wu said, adding that temperatures are expected to drop by 2oC to 3oC after tomorrow.

However, the cooler weather is also expected to improve the nation's air quality by lowering harmful ozone concentrations, officials at the Environmental Protection Administration said.

    Ozone warning

Last week, the environmental administration issued a warning as ground-level ozone concentrations in western Taiwan surged to a dangerous level of more than 120 parts per billion.

Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant with harmful effects on the respiratory system, while ozone in the upper atmosphere protects living organisms by blocking damaging ultraviolet light.
