Director of the Mainland Affairs Council's (MAC) Department of Legal Affairs Yang Chia-chun (楊家駿) will serve as the country's representative to Hong Kong, the council announced.
Yang will replace incumbent Pao Cheng-kang (鮑正鋼), who will return to Taiwan to work as a counselor to the council, a MAC high-ranking official said yesterday, requesting anonymity.
Pao has served as representative to Hong Kong since 2005. A new representative is assigned to the position about every three years.
The Executive Yuan will soon approve the personnel change, the official said.
Taiwan's representative office in Hong Kong is called the "Chung Hwa Travel Service" (中華旅行社) and the nation's top representative to Hong Kong has the title of "managing director."
Yang previously served as secretary of the Fair Trade Commission and was transferred to the MAC's Department of Legal Affairs in 2001.
Yang is a specialist in issues relating to the Act Governing Relations between Peoples of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (兩岸人民關係條例) and is familiar with legal issues regarding Chinese spouses living in Taiwan and regulations governing visits by Chinese citizens to Taiwan. Yang is one of few MAC officials to be allowed by the Chinese government to attend activities in China.
It remains unclear when Yang will begin his new position as the Hong Kong government must first grant Yang a visa.
