Angela Peng (´^«Û´@), a nursing school graduate and assistant research fellow at the Bureau of International Cooperation under the Department of Health, was not nervous about her upcoming trip abroad.
Having researched AIDS in Malawi during graduate school, Peng has been considering opportunities to put her skills to use overseas after graduation. When she heard about an opportunity with the department, she knew it was what she had been looking for.
The department recently decided to open a Taiwan Health Center in the Marshall Islands and sought staff for the facility.
Peng, along with doctors Kuo Ming-hung (³¢¦W§») and Huang Ming-you (¶À±Ó¯§), who are participating in the alternative military service program, were entrusted with the task of designing the center's operations.
"At first, I was a bit nervous about going," she told the Taipei Times, "but I felt more confident after I became familiar with what the job entails and what we are about to do."
The trio, with an average age of 26, is scheduled to depart on Saturday. They will become the first group of Taiwanese medical professionals stationed in the Marshall Islands for an extended period.
Kuo and Huang are also excited about the project.
"It saves us from wasting our time and gives us an opportunity to see something different," Huang said.
"I hope I can actually achieve something," Kuo said, adding that he hoped he will not put his supervisors to shame.
The department held a brief ceremony yesterday in honor of the trio's commitment to the project.
The three will be in charge of assisting government officials in curbing a rise in diabetes.
