Drill simulates a surprise attack by Chinese on capital

The nation has conducted another military drill simulating a Chinese attack on Taipei, the National Security Council said yesterday.

The drill began at 10pm on Saturday and ended at 6pm yesterday. It simulated a surprise attack from China with ballistic missiles and officials, led by President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), were required to respond to different scenarios.

The drill included decision making to ensure speedy restoration of government operations, crisis management, coordination of the government and military, disaster relief and requesting international support.

The council issued a statement after the exercise saying that the drill was realistic and the performance of the government officials and the military during the drill met expectations.

The exercise comes before a computer-simulation war scenario today that is part of a series of drills called Operation Hankuang.
