Incoming Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄) will visit China by the end of this month, KMT Vice Chairman Kuan Chung (關中) said yesterday.
Wu, who was elected on Saturday, is expected to visit China with other party officials for a breakthrough meeting with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Kuan said.
"It is extremely likely that he will visit in late April," Kuan said during a visit to Hangzhou.
Wu, 67, won easily after former chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) resigned following his indictment on corruption charges. But Wu's election was also seen as a sign of support for Ma, who is still expected to be the KMT candidate in next year's presidential race.
Kuan said Wu hopes to hold "substantive talks" with his CCP counterparts. He said the KMT would like to hammer out a more concrete version of an agreement that paved the way for the 1992 Koo-Wang talks.
Kuan said that Wu was not concerned he might be labeled as pro-China by the Democratic Progressive Party.
"He can't be attacked as overly partial toward the mainland," Kuan said.
