Daughter-in-law not suffering from depression: Chen

President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) daughter-in-law is not suffering from depression nor does she plan to have a second baby any time soon, the Presidential Office said yesterday.

The Presidential Office issued a statement yesterday, saying that the president and first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) were very pleased to have a granddaughter in the family.

They have three grand-sons from their only daughter Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤) and her husband Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘).

The statement said the president's son, Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), and daughter-in-law, Huang Jui-ching (黃睿靚), do not have any immediate plans for a second baby because Chen Chih-chung is planning to go back to school.

The statement was issued in response to a report published in this week's Next Magazine, which hit the newsstands yesterday.

The report claimed that Huang was suffering from postpartum depression and insomnia after Wu had expressed the hope to have a grandson from their only son. The report said that it was Wu's "last wish on her deathbed" and it has put tremendous amount of pressure on Huang.

Dismissing the allegation that Wu was dying, the Presidential Office said that Huang is not suffering from depression or insomnia.

"She has been devoting her attention to caring for the baby and appreciates the concern of the public," the statement said.

"Chen Chih-chung is also happy to be a father and often helps with the childcare," it also said.

The statement also expressed regret over the claim that Wu had tried to kill herself.

The report alleged that Wu had tried to end her own life because she has been suffering from depression since her indictment last November. Lu was indicted on graft and forgery charges in connection with President Chen's controversial "state affairs fund."
