Lien will not sign truce with CCP: KMT official

    By Lo Tien-bin

The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) has no plans to sign a truce with Beijing when former chairman Lien Chan (連戰) visits China later next month, said Chang Jung-kung (張榮恭), the director of the KMT's Mainland Affairs Division yesterday.

The statement was a response to speculation that Lien could sign a truce with top Chinese officials on behalf of his party when he attends an upcoming forum jointly arranged by the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from April 26 to 29 in Beijing.

Sources said that the truce had been scrapped because news of the plan had leaked to reporters and the two parties had failed to agree on details.

They added that the two parties were still discussing the title, content and topic of the annual forum.

Sources involved in planning the event said that China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) had closely watched recent political developments in Taiwan.

Beijing seems to believe that Lien's power is gradually weakening, the sources said. While former KMT chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) vie for power in the KMT, Beijing is reluctant to act.

KMT party officials said earlier this month that Lien would meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤) during his upcoming visit to China, which would be Lien's third visit to China.

Last April, Lien led a delegation of 170 business leaders and party officials to an economic and trade forum in Beijing.
