The chairman of the recently renamed Taiwan Post Co, Lai Ching-chyi (賴清祺), resigned yesterday after heading the institution for only nine months.
The vacancy will temporarily be filled by Vice Minister of Transportation and Communication Ho Nuan-hsuen (何煖軒). To fulfill legal requirements, a temporary board meeting will also be held to officially elect Ho as the chairman of the state-run firm.
The current president Wu Min-yu (吳民佑) will remain at his post.
Lai said in a telephone interview that he had already applied for retirement when he served as a deputy secretary-general in the Executive Yuan, and had been working late hours ever since he was appointed chairman of the company.
"I really want to take a break now," he said.
Lai said he had mentioned his desire to quit before the Lunar New Year, but his resignation was not accepted by Minister of Transportation and Communications Tsai Duei (蔡堆).
After the issuance of 228 Memorial stamps, Lai considered the time was right for him to officially resign.
"The company has been functioning as usual ever since the name change," he said, "I have completed my task."
For now, Lai said he wanted to spend more time with his family. When asked if he would accept another government position, he said that "a good rest is needed for one who is planning for a long journey."
Tsai said later that there was nothing they could do to keep Lai in his post.
Chunghwa Postal Workers Union chairman Tsai Liang-chuan (蔡兩全) said Lai's resignation might save him from having to face questions from pan-blue lawmakers at the Legislative Yuan.
