TSU caucus slams judges' treatment of first lady Wu

"Even Saddam Hussein enjoyed basic rights."

    Liao Pen-yen, TSU caucus whip

The Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) legislative caucus yesterday panned judges and prosecutors involved in the "state affairs fund" trial for ignoring the rights of the first lady during Friday's court session.

TSU caucus whip Liao Pen-yen (廖本煙) said the judges were "inhumane" for suggesting that first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) could choose to lie in a hospital bed during the court sessions if she felt uncomfortable.

Liao also blasted pan-blue legislators for making sarcastic comments about the first lady's condition after she was hospitalized during Friday's appearance in court.

"Even [former Iraqi president] Saddam Hussein enjoyed basic rights [during trials by the Iraqi Special Tribunal], but Wu, who has been in poor health, was satirized by pan-blue legislators," Liao said at a press conference.

Liao was responding to comments made by some pan-blue legislators on Friday after Wu was suddenly carried out of the courtroom by a nurse into an ambulance because she was suffering from severe low blood pressure and almost fainted.

Although some pan-blue lawmakers expressed compassion for Wu, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Hsu Shao-ping (徐少萍) found fault with Wu's outfit and criticized her as "having no sense of shame," while KMT Legislator Chiu Yi (邱毅) said the first lady faked the incident.

TSU Legislator Yin Ling-ying (尹玲瑛) said the public applied different standards to Taichung Mayor Jason Hu's (胡志強) wife Shaw Hsiao-ling (邵曉鈴) and Wu.

Shaw has been hospitalized since suffering serious injuries in a car accident on her way back from campaigning for KMT Kaohsiung mayoral candidate Huang Chun-ying (黃俊英) last month.

The public had not blamed Hu for taking a government van to campaign for Huang but expressed compassion for Shaw, said Yin, who, together with her TSU colleagues, held some red roses to show their "sincere love" for Wu during the press conference.
