Five social welfare groups in Taipei have sought to forge a "Love Front" and will hold a fundraising charity evening party on Dec. 14 to help school dropouts, an organizer of the event said yesterday.
The "Love Front" is being formed by the Good Friend Mission Center, the Born Anew Youth Caring Association, the Garden of Hope Foundation, the Cheng Feng Teenager's School and the Yi Lin Teenager's School, said Chu Tai-shen (朱台深), director-general of the Taipei Christian Church Association.
The five organizations will arrange for social workers to offer a variety of services, such as dropout prevention, caring and consulting, special education assistance for dropouts and students planning to quit school around the city, he said.
Chu said that according to the new rules concerning junior high school students in Taipei enacted by the Department of Education, schools are allowed to suspend students "unamenable to guidance" for two weeks.
He said the five organizations are worried that the stipulation will empower the schools to suspend students without informing the education authorities of their decision.
The fundraising dinner will take place at Fu Shiang Yuan Restaurant at the Taipei City Council building, Chu said.
