US supermarket denies latest Chiu Yi allegation

`GROUNDLESS': Tawa Supermarkets denied Chiu Yi's accusation that Chen Chih-chung invested in the company

Tawa Supermarkets yesterday rejected the latest claim made by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Chiu Yi (邱毅) about the store's relationship to the president's son, Chen Chih-chung (陳致中).

The vice president of the supermarket chain, Lee Chi-kwang(李啟光), said Chiu's claim was "unfactual and groundless."

Chiu held a press conference in Taipei yesterday and said that Chen Chih-chung established a company called R Jan LLC on Sept. 15, 2004. Chiu said R Jan LLC had a close relationship with the owner of the Tawa Supermarket, Roger Chen (陳河源).

Citing information he had downloaded from a Californian government Web site, Chiu said the registered address of R Jan LLC was the same as that of Roger Chen's business.

Chiu, however, didn't provide any evidence to support his claim that R Jan LLC was established by Chen Chih-chung.

The Los Angeles-based supermarket chain said on Thursday that all the company's shares are owned by Roger Chen and his family.

Lee said yesterday that R Jan LLC was established solely by Roger Chen and had nothing to do with Chen Chih-chung.

Lee went on to stress that members of the public were eligible for the US$5 million reward, which Tawa offered on Thursday to anyone who could provide evidence of Chen Chih-chung's alleged investment in the company.

Meanwhile, two Democratic Progressive Party lawmakers and a man surnamed Tsai held a separate press conference yesterday to refute Chiu's claim on Thursday that Chen Chih-chung had fabricated his US Employment Authorization Card (EAD) -- a claim he based on the absence of a fingerprint on the card.

Tsai displayed his own EAD which he received in late 2004 and said that it didn't have his fingerprint on it, but was still valid.
