The Nankang Sports Center opened for a trial period yesterday.
Until the end of this month, visitors will be given free access to some of its facilities, including the swimming pool, gym and badminton courts.
Beginning with the official opening on Friday, a fee will be charged, but by then the facilities will also include a scuba diving facility offering diving classes at NT$250 per class. The full course runs over 40 classes and costs NT$10,000, around NT$5,000 less than other such courses.
The Nankang Sports Center, the fourth to open in Taipei following the opening of the Chungshan, Peitou and Chungcheng centers, is located close to the Sungshan Railway Station in the Nankang District.
It is also the largest, filling all eight floors above ground and four underground in the facility.
There is a 450m2 gym, which can hold up to 100 sportspeople as well as indoor facilities for dance classes, golf practice, a 10m air gun shooting range and an archery field.
A representative of the Taipei City's Sports Office under the Department of Education said the scuba diving facility can hold 10 divers, and after completing a course of 40 classes, divers will be given a diving certificate.
Participants must register in advance, and the first registrations will be accepted on Friday.
The gym will have the latest equipment and professional instruction at a cost of just NT$50 per hour or NT$1,500 per month, which includes access to the swimming pool and spa.
