The 15th International Symposium and Book Fair on English Teaching opened at Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center in Taipei yesterday. The three-day symposium is an annual conference attended by English as a Second Language (ESL) educators, students and book publishers. Conference president David Dai (À¹ºû´) told participants that every year since its inception, the symposium has attracted thousands of ESL scholars from all over the world. Taipei Deputy Mayor King Pu-tseng (ª÷·ÁÁo) delivered the keynote speech, saying that the conference was vital to providing a platform for ESL professionals to exchange views on teaching English. Increasing the English language proficiency of the Taiwanese was vital to the country's globalization, further underscoring the importance of the symposium, King said. The symposium will run until tomorrow, offering free lectures by ESL professionals at the activity center from 8:30am to 6pm.
