Taiwan Solidarity Union legislator apologizes for backing wrong proposals

STAFF WRITER

Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Legislator Lai Shin-yuan (賴幸媛) yesterday apologized for a "misunderstanding" which resulted in her supporting proposals that the TSU caucus disagreed with.

During a vote on Monday, Lai supported a proposal to cut the pro-posed NT$3.2 million (US$99,303) annual budget for Academia Historica in half.

She also supported the pan-blue proposal to cut the president's annual special allowance fund from NT$50 million to NT$30 million.

A great volume of complaints came in the wake of Lai's behavior, with telephone calls flooding theTSU caucus office.

Lai held a press conference to explain her decisions.

"It was quite noisy during the vote. I held a document which was appended to a proposal that read Academia Historica should stay neutral at all times' so I voted yea," she said.

"I did not realize I had actually agreed to cut half of its budget," Lai said. "For that, I apologize."

As for the proposal to decrease the budget of the president's special allowance fund, Lai said that it was totally her own decision and had nothing to do with the party caucus.

"It is not a problem of how much money was cut. It is actually about reflecting on the need for a system that condones this kind of expenditure," she said.

Lai's behavior was regarded as a violation of party policy by the TSU.
