The Shei-pa National Park (雪霸國家公園) and Chunghwa Telecom have teamed up to install a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) satellite ground station at Guanwu Station (觀霧管理站), 2,050m above sea level. Park Director Lin Ching (林青) and Chunghwa Telecom's assistant general manager for its central Taiwan Li Ming-yuan (李銘淵) officially started the new device on Thursday, which will allow mountain climbers in the park to use their cellphones, teleconference and -- in case of an accident -- receive medical advice. The NT$3 million (US$90,300) VSAT system provides wireless Internet access within a 1km area.
