An official from Taipei City's Fire Department said that its new broadband wireless network was extremely valuable in rescue operations. He made the remarks yesterday following media criticism that the department had spent too much money on the network. He said that the establishment of the broadband wireless network around Taipei was the most successful infrastructure project carried out by the Taipei City Government so far, adding that the network would improve the quality of the rescue services. The Fire Department should be equipped with every modern device that it can get to overcome defects in fixed-line telecommunication systems, which are sometimes interrupted by unknown factors during emergencies, the official said.
