The tiny Pacific state of Nauru criticized the UN yesterday for gagging debate on whether Taiwan should be allowed to join the international body. Nauru President Ludwig Scotty, whose country receives generous aid from Taiwan, protested a US General Committee decision earlier this month to limit discussion on Taiwan's UN representation. "The employment of procedural tricks to deny member countries their right to debate only brings into question the universality of the UN," Scotty said in a statement issued through Nauru's Melbourne-based public affairs office. "Such tricks only serve to deny Nauru and like-minded countries our right to be heard." Taiwan has never received recognition from the UN, largely because of the efforts of China. Taipei has sought to overcome its international isolation by seeking allies in small Pacific nations.
