Taiwan Quick Take: Spouse hotline to open

A free hotline to provide consulting services for foreign spouses in Taiwan will be established on Oct. 1, with help available in Chinese, English, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. The hotline is intended to help spouses get better accustomed to life here, the chairman of Chunghwa Telecom announced yesterday. Hochen Tan (賀陳旦) said that as the population of foreign wives has rapidly increased in recent years, there is a need to eliminate the linguistic and cultural differences encountered. The free service in partnership with the TransAsia Sisters Association and Nice Henry Technology Co. Parenting is especially a problem for foreign wives, the spokesman said, adding that the service will help foreign wives overcome cultural shock. The free phone number is 0800-080-508.
