This year's first black-faced spoonbill has arrived in Taiwan to winter at a wetlands sanctuary in Tainan County, the county's bureau of agriculture said yesterday. A patrol guard at Chiku Wetlands (七股濕地) sanctuary and a senior wild bird observer spotted the rare migratory bird on Monday, 10 days earlier than last year, according to the bureau. With cooling temperatures, flocks of the endangered birds will arrive here to spend the winter. Records show that in the past, the birds arrived during the period between the end of September and November. Normally they stay until the following March, April or May. For years, the Chiku Wetlands sanctuary near the estuary of the Tsengwen River (曾文溪) in Tainan County has been one of the world's major habitats for black-faced spoonbills.
