Taiwan Quick Take: CWB raises rain alert

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) heightened its heavy rain alert for the nation yesterday with a statement saying that all areas of the country should guard against heavy or torrential rain through today. According to CWB forecasters, northern and northeastern Taiwan may experience torrential rains as a result of a stationary front lingering over the nation, while other areas of Taiwan are expected to have localized heavy rain. The CWB said people living in mountainous regions should take extra precautions against the threat of landslides, falling rocks, mudslides and flooding. The bureau noted that from midnight to 6:10pm yesterday, Taipei and Ilan counties recorded precipitation of more than 360mm, surpassing the standard used to define rain as being "torrential."
