Taiwan Quick Take: Crashes spike before dawn

Motorists on freeways are most prone to have accidents between midnight and 6am every day and especially on Fridays, the Taiwan Area National Expressway Bureau said yesterday. Bureau officials said that traffic on freeways during those hours only accounts for 25 percent of daily traffic; but 35.9 percent of all accidents occur during this time, mainly because lighter traffic leads to cars traveling faster. The accident rate for northbound vehicles on the National Chungshan Freeway is as high as 52.8 percent during this time, with drunk driving being the leading cause of such accidents. The average accident rate on freeways is 14.3 percent daily, but the accident rate tends to go up on Fridays, the officials said. Most accidents are caused by drivers not maintaining a proper distance between vehicles, they added.
