Taiwan Quick Take: Lee postpones Japan trip

Former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) has decided to postpone a visit to Japan later this month owing to health reasons, an aide said yesterday. "Former President Lee will delay his trip to Japan for health reasons, but the new travel date is yet to be set," said Chen Chien-ming (陳建銘), a spokesman for the Taiwan Solidarity Union, of which Lee is the "spiritual leader." Lee was originally scheduled to visit Japan between Sept. 12 and 17 after he was forced to scrap a trip planned in May when he contracted tuberculosis. Tokyo switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1972 and has since barred official contacts with Taiwan, a position it says remains unchanged despite granting Lee a visa.
