The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday filed a civil lawsuit against social critic Cheng Tsun-chi (鄭村棋) for calling it a "den of bandits" and for defaming its chairman. Meng Yi-chao (孟義超) , director of the party's department of information and public affairs, said Cheng had carried out character assassination against DPP Chairman Yu Shyi-kun during a television talk show broadcast on Aug. 30. Meng said the party was suing Cheng for slander and defamation and is demanding he compensate the party and Yu NT$10 million (US$305,000) each, in addition to publishing an open apology in four of Taiwan's major dailies.
