Bowa-Successful Asset Manage-ment vice general-manager Yang Kuo-cheng (楊國城) lost three fingers, suffered burns to his chest and may have been blinded after a package delivered by a courier to his office in downtown Taipei exploded yesterday morning.

"This explosion took place around 9am," said Wu Su-lu (吳思陸), head of the Taipei City Police Department's Da-an Precinct. "Yang opened the package and triggered the explosive. We are trying to identify potential suspects by screening Yang's associates and clients."

The police said that Yang was sent to National Taiwan University Hospital for treatment. His life was not in danger.

The Taipei Police Department's Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) is helping in the investigation by attempting to narrow the list of suspects by identifying those who might be capable of making a bomb.

"This bomb was made by a professional," said Chen Che-wen (陳檡文), captain of the CIC. "The explosive was extremely stable and the bomb was designed so that it would only injure the person who opened it. Obviously, the bomb maker specifically targeted Yang."

The CIC said that 40-year-old Yang only joined Bowa-Successful Asset Management in April. The package was mailed from Tamsui, Taipei County, to Yang's previous office on Aug. 28. It was returned to the couriers and eventually forwarded to Yang's new office, which is located on Dunhua S Road in Taipei City.
