MOFA admits to funding Palau's `little white house'

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesman Michel Lu (呂慶龍) confirmed yesterday that the government plans to provide financial support for Palau to build its presidential office building.

The spokesman, however, denied local media speculation that the amount in question was as much as NT$1.2 billion (about US$36 million).

A report in yesterday's edition of the Chinese-language Next magazine said that the Taiwanese government had offered NT$1.2 billion to Palau to build a presidential office and other infrastructure, including new airport landing lanes, a highway and a GSM network.

"Assisting Palau in building a `little white house' is one of the projects that Taiwan and Palau are working on together. But ... it is not suitable for us to make the exact amount of our contribution public," Lu said

"However, the sum is far less then the press has speculated," he added.
