New study shows obesity, diabetes related to cancer

    By Shelley Shan

Medical experts yesterday pre-sented a ground-breaking discovery that explains why obese individuals have a higher than average chance of developing breast cancers and diabetes.

The findings were outlined by Academia Sinica researcher Hung chi-ming (洪奇明) at the 2006 International Breast Cancer Symposium, which opened yesterday and finishes today.

Hosted in Taipei yesterday by the Breast Cancer Society of Taiwan, the symposium was attended by local medical professionals as well as those from the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas.

Hung identified the path through which lymphocyte -- any of a number of white blood cells -- will secrete a kind of hormone that supplies nutrients to some malignant tumors.

His study showed that this type of hormone will prevent insulin from entering the bloodstream, causing the glucose level to increase. The situation will eventually lead to the occurrence of diabetes.

Numerous studies have attempted to find ways to curb the spread of tumors to other organs in the body -- masticization.

Hung has developed endo-CD, a new medication that synthesizes the effects of endostatin and cytosine deaminase -- two agents that help prevent this.
