Taiwan Quick Take: Gangster role feared

STAFF WRITER WITH CNA

The police are keeping an eye on gangsters who could mingle with crowds expected at the "Depose President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁)" sit-in beginning on Friday evening, National Police Agency officials said. The officials cited intelligence that associates of Kuo Chun-liang (郭俊良), a high-ranking member of the Bamboo Union criminal organization, might "work" as security guards or take part in the protests. Kuo was arrested earlier this year in the "Sweeping Thunder" operation against organized crime, the officials said. "If the reports are true, we are worried about the possibility of the imminent and massive sit-in getting out of control and leading to violent confrontations with radical DPP [Democratic Progressive Party] supporters," a protester statement said, adding that law enforcement authorities should investigate the case and exercise their authority in order to protect the protesters.
