China has appealed to Taiwan to let Beijing's top official for Taiwan affairs visit the nation in October, according to comments reported yesterday by China's state-run Xinhua news agency. The trip by Chen Yunlin (陳雲林), director of the Taiwan Affairs Office, would be the highest-level visit by a Chinese official to Taiwan in years. "The mainland hoped the Taiwan authorities would permit Chen's delegation to attend the forum" on farm trade in October, Xinhua said, citing a spokesman for the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait.
