Taiwan Quick Take: Cargo ship sinks off Yunlin

A cargo ship sank off the coast of Yunlin yesterday after sideswiping a passing fishing boat, Coast Guard Administration (CGA) authorities reported. The Lungyun No. 3, a 601 tonne cargo vessel from Kaohsiung, sideswiped the fishing boat Hunghui, also from Kaohsiung, about 15 nautical miles (27.78km) off Yunlin's Taitzu port at around 1am yesterday, according to Chiayi-based CGA officers. The Lungyun began to take on water from a large gash in its side soon after the crash, causing it to sink very quickly, the officers said. All eight crew members were rescued by three CGA patrol boats, they said. Of the eight crew members, Ye Mintun, a deckhand from Myanmar who suffered cuts to his side, was airlifted to a hospital in Putzu (朴子), Yunlin County, for treatment. The other seven crew members were unharmed, the officers said.
