Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Yu Shyi-kun will leave for Japan today to attend the funeral of former Japanese prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, who died on July 1. President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) appointed Yu as his special envoy to the event. The director of the DPP's Department of Chinese Affairs, Lai I-chung (賴怡忠), yesterday confirmed the news and said that the Presidential Office would issue a formal statement about Yu's trip. According to the Public Affairs Office of the Presidential Office, Presidential Office Secretary-General Mark Chen (陳唐山) would have been the envoy to Hashimoto's funeral, but was unable to make the trip.
