Renowned New York Yankees pitcher Wang Chien-ming (王建民) earlier this week donated the proceeds from the sale of players' cards autographed by him to the Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders and several school baseball teams. Wang and a potato chip manufacturer auctioned 32 players' cards with Wang's autograph on them on a Web site starting in the middle of May. The auction raised NT$320,000 (US$9,697), with the highest bid being NT$23,000 for a single card. Wang designated that half of the proceeds would go to the rare disorders foundation, a spokesperson said. The remainder was donated to five school baseball teams, four of which are in Hualien. Baseball equipment worth NT$100,000 was donated to Chong-syue Elementary School in Tainan, where Wang grew up.
