The Ministry of Education is planning to establish a sports university to help groom athletes to be more competitive at the international level, an official said yesterday.
Vice Minister of Education Chou Tsan-teh (周燦德) said that the sports university will combine the nation's three sports colleges to produce world-class athletes, coaches and sports teachers.
"The sports university is scheduled to open next spring or autumn. We will hire foreign and Chinese [sic] teachers and coaches to teach our students," he said.
The Taitung Experimental Sports Middle School will be placed under the auspices of the sports university.
Upon graduation, promising students from the school will be able to enroll at the university.
The proposed university reflects a growing determination within the government to promote sports.
